Drive solutions for off-highway and mobile machinery
The electrification of mobile machinery involves more than simply replacing internal combustion engines with electric motors. In construction machinery, agricultural machinery, material handling and mining applications, the drive, hydraulics, cooling and control systems must function as an integrated whole – making the motor a key element in this integration.

What makes the drive task challenging
Off-highway applications place high demands on torque, efficiency and robustness. At the same time, drives must work together with hydraulics, cooling systems and control systems while fitting into limited installation space.
High forces, load peaks and limited installation space require a carefully tailored motor design. Key factors include torque and power density, overload capability and sufficient thermal reserves
Electric pump drives must deliver power as required and match the pressure, flow rate and load profile of the hydraulic system. Variable speeds and high efficiency help reduce unnecessary idle losses.
Dust, moisture, vibration, temperature fluctuations and frequent load changes place high demands on the drive. Cooling, winding, rotor and mechanical design must be adapted to the actual operating conditions.
The drive must work together with the inverter, vehicle control system, sensors, hydraulics and battery system. Electrical and mechanical interfaces should therefore be considered during the design stage.
Standard motors work as long as torque, speed, cooling, protection rating and interfaces remain within known limits. In off-highway applications, problems rarely arise from a single limitation, but rather from a combination of factors: high peak loads, confined installation space, severe vibrations, variable duty cycles and customer-specific interfaces.
The crucial point here differs from that in many other industries: in this case, a standard motor is often technically sufficient – it simply cannot be optimally integrated into the machine. And it is precisely this integration that determines efficiency, installation space and operational safety in mobile machinery. ATE therefore does not develop standard products, but rather drive systems tailored to the specific machine and task.
How ATE approaches such tasks
Clarify requirements
Torque, speed range, load profile, duty cycle, supply voltage, installation space, cooling and interfaces form the basis for the assessment. Inverter data, sensors, protection requirements and planned production volumes are also taken into account.Designing the drive
Motor technology, rotor/stator geometry and winding design are tailored to the requirements of the mobile work machine. Electromagnetic and thermal design consider actual load profiles, overload conditions and operating environments.Integration into the machine
The motor, inverter, cooling system and mechanical interfaces are adapted to the installation conditions and requirements of the work machine.Preparing for implementation
From functional prototypes and validation to test bench trials, small-series production and series readiness, ATE supports the implementation process. Development and manufacturing work hand in hand, tailored to the OEM's requirements and planned production volumes. What goes into this
Project Example: Electric Pump Drive for a mobile machinery
Initial situation: An OEM is electrifying the hydraulic functions of a mobile work machine. The mechanically driven hydraulic pump is to be replaced by an electric drive. Limited installation space, high peak loads, variable speeds and defined load cycles place specific demands on the drive design.
ATE solution: ATE develops a customized electric motor with tailored rotor and stator components. The design takes into account the actual load profile, thermal requirements and mechanical interfaces for integration into the existing machine architecture.
Result: An application-specific drive solution for the electrification of the hydraulic function, designed to meet the machine's operating conditions and integrate into the existing system.
