Drive solutions for water and wastewater technology

When standard motors reach their limits

Pumps and aeration systems are among the biggest energy consumers in any water treatment plant – and operate continuously. Even small gains in drive efficiency add up to significant cost savings over the system’s lifetime.

What makes the drive task challenging

Technical requirements

Water and wastewater treatment plants operate continuously, often in damp conditions, in contact with process media and under varying load profiles. Three factors determine the design.

Pumps, blowers and agitators must operate stably even at variable flow rates. The decisive factor is not the rated speed, but the behaviour at the actual operating point – including partial load, continuous thermal stress, and bearing and vibration behaviour.

Submersible and media-contacting applications place high demands on seals, insulation and cooling – often in confined installation spaces, with corrosive media and in environments at risk of flooding. Depending on the application, cooling may be air-cooled, water-cooled or sleeve-cooled.

This is where the greatest potential for improvement lies: ventilation and pumps account for the majority of the system’s energy consumption. High efficiency at the actual operating point – not just at the rated point – has a direct impact on operating costs. Variable-speed and field-weakening concepts are specifically designed to address this.

When a standard motor does not fit properly

Limitations of standard motors

Standard motors operate within defined parameters. As soon as the medium, load profile, installation space, cooling or interfaces deviate from the catalogue specifications, limitations arise – in terms of efficiency, service life or integration.

In water and wastewater technology, these deviations often occur simultaneously: corrosive media, confined installation space, inverter operation and a load profile that rarely corresponds to the rated point. ATE therefore does not develop drives in isolation, but as part of the overall system comprising mechanical, electrical and process requirements.

How ATE approaches such tasks

The ATE approach
1
Clarify requirements
speed range, torque, load characteristics, medium and environment, cooling, installation space, inverter operation, and interfaces with mechanical components and control systems. This forms the basis for a design that works not only on paper but also in actual plant operation.
2
Designing the drive
The rotor, stator and windings are tailored to the application – synchronous, asynchronous, torque, direct or field-weakening high-speed concepts. From individual components to built-in motors.
3
Integration into the machine
Cooling concept, mechanical interfaces, sensor technology, bearings and service access are considered as part of the system, not as afterthoughts.
4
Preparing for implementation
From functional prototypes through validation and test bench testing to series production. Development and manufacturing under one roof.

CUSTOMIZED STARTING FROM A QUANTITY 1

IN-HOUSE DEVELOPMENT AND MANUFACTURING

FROM PROTOTYPE TO SERIES – FROM A SINGLE SOURCE

What goes into this

Relevant ATE expertise

Customized drive for a water treatment module

Project example

Initial situation: An OEM is developing a compact water treatment system with variable flow rate. Installation space is limited, and the drive is required to operate continuously under controlled conditions.

ATE solution: Application-specific motor with matched rotor and stator components, a thermally optimized cooling concept, defined mechanical interfaces and a design tailored to the relevant operating point.

Result: A compact, integrable and series-production-ready drive solution for continuous operation.
